Brief Overview

  • 3,400 NFL players who played between 1959 – 1988
  • By 2007 – 334 of these had died at an average age of 54 years
  • Players who spent > than five seasons in the NFL were 3 times more likely to die of a degenerative disease including:
    • Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
    • Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)
    • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease
    • Deaths related to Dementia/AD were 3.6 times higher
    • Deaths related to ALS were 4.31 times higher
